Is Bars & Stripes compatible with my bar code equipment?

In a word - yes.   Bars & Stripes is based upon industry standard specifications.  So bar codes produced by Bars & Stripes are fully compliant and can be read by any standard bar code equipment.

Do I need a barcode printer?

No.   Bars & Stripes will produce bar codes on standard office quality Windows printers.  Printers using laser, thermal or inkjet technologies are acceptable as long as the resolution is at least 300 dpi (dots per inch). 600 dpi is even better and is the de-facto standard for today's computer printers. That said, a better quality printer will produce better barcodes that are easier to read.  You should use a good printer, good paper, and make sure your toner or inkjet cartridge is in good condition.

Do I need to register my bar codes?

No, with one exception.  If you need to put UPC bar codes on your retail products that you are selling through 3rd part channels, you will want to become a member of the Uniform Code Council and get a company registration number to incorporate into your bar codes.  Otherwise, you don't need to.

Why are there different versions?

As Microsoft Word has evolved, the scripting language embedded in it has changed as well.  Bars & Stripes uses this scripting language to integrate its bar code functions with Words document and graphics features.  This evolution necessitated changes to Bars & Stripes.  Thus, there is a different version of Bars & Stripes for each version of Word for Windows.

What is the Members area for?

The Members area is a private part of this website for customers only.  When you purchase a Bars & Stripes unlock code, you will be added to our members list (This sometimes takes a day after you've made your purchase).  To log onto the Members area, Click the Members link and enter your email address in the username field, and your password in the password field.  (That's why we ask for a password when you purchase an unlock code.)

Can I cut and paste bar codes to another application?

Yes you can.  Bars & Stripes makes standard bitmap images which can be copied and pasted between applications with ease.   Note that when Bars & Stripes makes a bar code:   First the bar code bitmap is inserted into MS Word.  Secondly, the bar code bitmap is re-sized using information about the current default printer.  This is done so that the printed bar code is easily scanned.

You may have to resize the bar code after pasting it into a different application.

How do I get a UPC barcode?

If  you are required by your sales channel or customer to bar code your products, you may need to get a formal UPC number.

For this special case, your company may need to join Uniform Code Council, Inc. (UCC). When you become a member, your company will be assigned an identification number licensed for your company's use (UCC Company Prefix). You will use this number to create your own 12-digit UPC barcodes.

What is an unlock code?

You can download Bars & Stripes from our website at any time for a free trial.  The free downloadable software is fully functional - with one exception.  Each bar code you make with Bars & Stripes is randomly modified.  This allows you to completely test the software but also protects us.  Once you know its the right choice, you purchase an Unlock code from our site. By entering this unlock code into your software, you remove the randomization characteristic.

Make sure its right for you before you buy.  All purchases are final.
